Life very seldom presents us with opportunities to stop and reflect on how we truly feel or think about ourselves, our past experiences, our choices, our goals and so forth. We rarely get the chance to look at our lives and ourselves in an honest and sincere way. So it’s not that unusual that when we start to feel depressed, anxious, resentful, angry, and so forth that we don’t understand the distress we feel or where exactly the feelings come from. Individual psychotherapy provides individuals with the opportunity to take time in their lives to explore where their difficulties stem from and how these difficulties impact their relationships, their behaviour and almost every aspect of their lives.

Individual therapy allows one to develop insight which is to understand how, why, where and when his/her difficulties impact negatively on his/her life. The therapy allows an individual to begin understanding the meaning in symptoms and patterns of behaviour. Within the structured relationship between therapist and patient, deep-seated problems may be explored and even resolved. Individual psychotherapy can be useful in addressing difficulties when it comes to forming or maintaining relationships, poor self-confidence, feeling depressed, suffering loss, intimacy and sexual difficulties as well as stress and anxiety.

Individual psychotherapy involves the therapist and the patient meeting face to face. The patient is encouraged to speak freely - to discuss whatever comes to mind. Patterns in the patient's material that suggest recurrent conflicts, that the patient may be unaware of, are identified or explored. The patient's self-understanding is developed when relevant observations and patterns are reflected back to him/her. Fears, obsessions, hopes, difficulties, expectations and so forth are then consciously explored and dealt with.
